Rhule changing culture of Baylor football program Baylor Bears Football. During a 7. 2 hour whirlwind tour in mid May, Matt Rhule roared through Texas to spread the word to Baylor alumni groups. Rhule spoke to groups in San Antonio, Austin, Tyler, Fort Worth, Midland, Amarillo and Lubbock. At every stop the message was the same The Baylor football culture is changing for the better. The reception was fantastic, Rhule said. I thought it was really appropriate and a good time to go across the state and see people who bleed green and gold and love Baylor. For them to hear from Baylor athletic director Mack Rhoades and myself and what were doing and where were headed, I thought it was really good for them and us. Rhule not only talked about the football program hes trying to build, he told them how he and his coaching staff are making their players understand the responsibility they have to represent Baylor the right way after the sexual assault scandal that brought down Art Briles program. Were really working with the kids to make them the best football players, students and men, Rhule said. We talked about the culture of excellence were trying to build. I talked about the accomplishments weve had and that we had the highest GPA since the 1. While hitting multiple cities in three days was a push, working long, crazy hours is Rhules norm. During the seven months since he was hired as Baylors football coach from Temple University, hes built a coaching staff, recruited almost from scratch, and began to put together his first team during spring drills. Rhule believes his coaching staff has done a remarkable job in limited time, but much more needs to be done as the 2. Liberty on Sept. 2. People dont recognize the enormity of what theyve done, Rhule said. I dont know that my coaching staff could have done any more than what weve done right now. Im proud of that but at the same time I know were not anywhere near where we need to be. Im always about Hey, whats next. We have so much further to go. When Rhule arrived at Baylor last December, Stafford defensive back Jalen Pitre was the only commitment remaining after the fallout from the Briles era. The assistant coaches from Briles staff did very little recruiting during the fall after interim head coach Jim Grobe took over. But by the Feb. 1 national signing date, Rhule and his staff put together a 2. No. 3. 4 nationally by Rivals. Theyve also added valuable transfers like former Arizona quarterback Anu Solomon, Tennessee receiver running back Jalen Hurd and Texas A M defensive lineman James Lockhart. Rhule has already pieced together an impressive 2. Schopenhauer Die Welt Als Wille Und Vorstellung Ebook. Despite the negative publicity swirling around the football program, Rhule said it hasnt been difficult to find recruits who want to attend Baylor. People want to be at Baylor, Rhule said. While the school has undergone a hard time recently, its a place that has been educating young people since 1. They can get a great education and have elite athletics. Our track record is to take under recruited guys and put them in the NFL. I think that attracts a lot of kids. Not hiding the past. While Rhule and his staff dont try to hide Baylors sexual assault issues of the past, their focus in recruiting is how they are changing the culture of the program. I acknowledge whats happened but we talk about this is what were going to do moving forward, Rhule said. The recruits come here and visit and see our players and coaches and how they interact with each other, and I think they can tell this is a really healthy place. When I first got here, I wouldnt have said that. It wasnt a healthy situation. The kids were beaten up. A lot had happened. But in a few shorts months when people visit they can see this is a healthy culture thats only going to get healthier. Through text messages, Rhule constantly sends out reminders to the players on his roster about how they need to show accountability in everything they do on and off the field. He makes them understand that they need to help each other stay out of potentially bad situations. We do that on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, Rhule said. Thats when most college kids are out and about. We did that at Temple. Its just a reminder to remember who you are and that youre a Baylor Bear and be respectful to women. Get yourself out of bad situations and protect a teammate. Rhules goal is to develop his players as students, athletes and good citizens. Its not enough to put a good football team on the field. How his players grow off the field is just as vital, and thats why he pushes academic excellence and community service. Its about continuing to model and teach and demand that the guys in our program act like men, Rhule said. What does it mean to be a man To us its that you respect authority, you stand up to injustice whether its popular or not, you protect those that are weaker than you. Youre honest, youre accountable, you live a life of integrity. We want them to grow into men while theyre here and be great husbands and fathers when they leave. Areas to improve. While Rhule was pleased with the progress his team made during spring drills, he said the Bears need to continue to build in many different areas to put a competitive team on the field in the fall. Baylors biggest concern is a thin offensive line that took a big hit when starting center Tanner Thrift went down with a career ending knee injury in the spring. Walk on Daniel Russell, the younger brother of former Baylor quarterback Seth Russell, will get a long look at center. Rhule said that freshmen Ryan Miller, Xavier Newman and Jason Moore are also possibilities at center. Daniel Russell played in the spring, and hes losing a bunch of weight to get ready, Rhule said. It will either be one of the older guys stepping into it or one of the younger kids. Well compete and see what happens and who the best guy is, who the best fit is. Of the three freshmen, Ryan Miller has the most experience at center. Though he was impressed by the performances of quarterbacks Zach Smith, Solomon and freshman Charlie Brewer during spring drills, Rhule wont name a starting quarterback until he sees how they develop during preseason drills in August. Smith got the majority of the first team snaps during the spring after taking over for injured Seth Russell last season. But Solomon brings a great deal of experience as a graduate transfer from Arizona while Brewer showed why he was the Class 6. A offensive player of the year for a state championship team at Lake Travis last season. Rhule said its important that the quarterbacks continue to show their leadership qualities as they push through offseason workouts before the start of August drills. Baylors offense will feature elements of the spread and pro styles, and Rhule wants a quarterback who is proficient in both offenses. The biggest thing for me is for the quarterbacks to establish a work ethic where people look at you as a leader and also learn the plays and what you have to do, Rhule said. You play at such a high level that people want to follow you. Thats a process and theyre in the middle of it. All the guys are working hard to do it, so well see who can establish themselves coming into camp. Rhule has no timetable on when hell name a starting quarterback, but hed like for one to emerge as soon as possible. It could be the first game, it could go through four games, Rhule said.
